Living water

John 4:13-24
13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
15 “Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”


16 “Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.
17"I have no husband," she replied.
18 Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."
19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
21 Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

I love the interchange between Jesus and this woman. He manages to smash about 2 or 3 cultural barriers at once here. Jews didn't talk to Samaritans and men didn't make it a practice to have public dialogs with women, especially a Jewish man and a Samaritan woman! Jesus doesn't seem to think anything of it. He has no problem having a lengthy conversation with her. He meets her right where she is! Just by stopping to talk with her by the well, He demonstranted that he cared more about her as a person than going along with the cultural norm.

She came to the well for drinking water and got the Living Water Himself!
